OK, there’s a lot of discussion about this video clip, supposedly made by some U.S. soldiers stationed overseas, and which some folks are saying is intended to take a stand against the military’s anti-gay “don’t ask don’t tell” policy.
Some folks think it’s brilliant satire. Some folks think it’s downright homophobic. Watch it and tell us what you think:
this video was only up for about a day – it has since been removed by the user on youtube – my only regret – I didn’t record it off the site when I had the chance. I can see how people think it’s homophobic – but personally – I found it very funny, and well thought out – plus, the eye candy was quite good! And if you read the captions and “disclaimer” they more or less said they weren’t poking fun at gays – but more so at the DADT policy, least that was my interpretation of what they wrote.
@BDUB: This version was still working here as of Saturday morning.
From what I understand, the original video was posted by a U.S. serviceman named Cody, and the Army made him take it down. It has been reposted (this version) by someone who is not in the military and is therefore not under command from any military officer and can’t be forced to remove it. I also understand that the soldier who made the video has expressly said it was not meant to support or oppose allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly. He was just making a “funny” video. The young man who reposted it is the one saying it supports gays and lesbians and their right to serve openly.
Whatever the motivation for producing it was, the result is funny. Someone involved in the production obviously had some knowledge about gay life from an insider’s perspective, in my humble but often challenged opinion.
In the military when you combine “Funny” and something to do with being gay it usually means making fun of gay people out of disrespect. It may not be mean spirited, but in an organization that kicks out actual gay people it doesn’t help.
That being said, men in the military are the touch each other A LOT. If society did say that makes them “gay” we wouldn’t have assholes imposing DADT. DADT lets men in the military touch each other without worry of being called gay. If we really want to improve the lives of gay people we have to start examining gender and the “rules” we make men follow and the disgust men are taught towards all things feminine. That goes for gay and straight men who hate women.
@JohnWright – thanks!!! Glad that your post still works – and that someone else reposted it – sorry for the confusion – I had the original youtube post bookmarked and it was removed. Thanks for clearing that up!
“The (Voice’s Instant Tea) poll question is merely seeking to determine what our readers think, and so far a majority say they think she’s gay.”
Actually, as of today, only 1/3 of the responders think she’s gay.
Regardless of the occupation, soldier or judge, a person’s sexual orientation doesn’t qualify or disqualify them for a job.
This week’s poll question is something I would expect to find in the old TWT bar magazine or asked by the US military.
I think it’s funny and entertaining.
I would assume they meant it as a joke and not homophobic. Just looking for their 15 minutes of fame on youTube.
Given the younger ages of the guys in the video, I would assume most are accepting of gays, as there is a big age generational difference in acceptance these days.
I would have to agree that probably a gay guy might have coached some of them on how to act gay.
