Rakos brings 23 years of experience to program offered through collaboration between Resource Center, SMU

Officials with the Resource Center of Dallas this week announced that Sabine Rakos has been named assistant director of RCD’s Center for Family Counseling, a program created in collaboration with Southern Methodist University’s Simmons School of Education and Human Development.
Rakos will directly supervise graduate-level student counselors who join the program about every 10 weeks.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern State College and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. She has been a licensed clinical social worker since 1986.
Prior to joining the Center for Family Counseling, Rakos had been in private practice in Denton County for 15 years.
Cece Cox, associate executive director for GLBT services at RCD, said that Rakos was chosen, following an extensive search, for her more than 23 years of experience in counseling and management and her extensive knowledge of the LGBT community.
"Her presence strengthens and reaffirms Resource Center’s and SMU’s commitment to the counseling program, which provides a service unavailable in our community for many years," Cox said.
Rakos said she is honored to join what is an important new program.
"This partnership is a valuable resource not only for those receiving counseling, but also for the students who have chosen this field as their career path," Rakos said.
"It is vital for the students’ professional success to have real-world, practical experience though programs such as the Center for Family Counseling."
The Center for Family Counseling offers counseling for a wide range of issues including grief, depression, substance use, coming out, anxiety, couples’ difficulties, family relations, gender identity and more.
Individual counseling is available on a sliding scale, from $20 to $45. Group sessions are $10 per person, per session. A transgender group is currently offered, with plans to develop additional groups.
The program does not currently accept insurance, Cox said, adding that payment can be made through cash or checks.
The program is staffed by students and interns in SMU’s Master of Science Counseling Education Program, which prepares individuals for professional practice as counselors. For more information on the program or to schedule an appointment, call 214-393-3680.
