James Andrew "Jim" Maertens, 72, a retired accountant from Fort Worth, died Monday, Sept. 14.
Born March 7, 1937 in Marshall, Minn., he graduated in 1957 from the Minnesota School of Business with an associate degree in accounting and served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962.
Maertens was an active volunteer at the Cathedral of Hope where he served as an usher captain and helped coordinate the benevolence ministries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He volunteered as the accountant for Youth First Texas, and also helped organize one of the first PWA Supper Clubs for AIDS Services of Dallas.
Maertens was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Margaret Maertens.
He is survived by his partner of 34 years, Jim Hurt; his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Dick Larson of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; his brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Pat Maaertens of St. Paul, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, Sept. 21, at Cathedral of Hope, with the Rev. Carol West delivering the eulogy and the Rev. Shelly Hamilton officiating. Entombment followed in the Memorial Garden at the Cathedral of Hope.
The family asks that memorial donations be given to Youth First Texas, 3824 Cedar Springs Road, Ste. 569, Dallas, Texas 75219, or to Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas, Texas 75235.
Arrangements were under the direction of Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home and Crematory in Fort Worth.
