Kenneth Lee Mitchell Jr., 47, a West Texas native and longtime resident of Dallas, died on June 4.

He was born and raised in Breckenridge, Texas, and graduated as valedictorian from Breckenridge High School in 1976. He loved riding horses and spending time on ranches, and “cutting” was a favorite pastime. He was a top ten state 4-H cutting exhibitor for three consecutive years.

He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture. He was a member of Alpha Zeta fraternity.

For the past 13 years he worked in the administrative office of the maintenance division at Southwest Airlines.

He was also a dedicated member of the Texas Gay Rodeo Association.

He is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Freda Breckenridge; sister Diane and Mick Smith of Christoval, Texas; niece Stephanie and husband Cory Shockley of Austin; great niece Emma; and his very special cousin, Gary Estes and his wife Erin, of Dallas.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at First Christian Church in Breckenridge. Burial followed in Caddo Cemetery.

The Texas Gay Rodeo Association will hold a Celebration of Life for Ken scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 11 at the Round-Up Saloon.
