With almost 70 percent of the vote counted, out lesbian Annise Parker has taken a commanding lead in the Houston mayoral runoff. She has 54 percent of the vote and Dallas Voice is declaring her the winner. Other news outlets in the room are discussing it but have not declared a winner as yet.
Parker is ahead by about 10,000 votes. Houston will become the largest city with an LGBT mayor. Other analysts in the room have agreed that there would be no way for Gene Locke to catch up.
Lane Lewis, an openly gay candidate for Houston City Council, will not win his race. He has only 44 percent of the vote. Lesbian City Councilwoman Sue Lovell looks headed for re-election with 55 percent of the vote in her race.
