Coast Guard finds human remains among plane debris
A Dallas couple were among the five people killed when their twin-engine Cessna crashed in the Gulf of Mexico 20 miles east of Port Richey, Fla., on Wednesday, July 8.
Roland Schurrer, 40, was president of Quality Powder Coating LP. His partner Steve Barrows, 33, was company pilot and marketing representative.
The men shared a home in the Knox-Henderson area.
The three other passengers were identified as company customers from Florida.
Human remains were discovered Thursday, July 9 among a two-mile debris field off Florida’s Gulf Coast from the crash.
The plane was flying from McKinney, Texas, to Tampa when it went down Wednesday afternoon. The Federal Aviation Administration said air traffic controllers in Jacksonville lost radio and radar contact with the plane after it reported turbulence at 1:52 p.m.
A forecaster at the National Weather Service said there were thunderstorms and lightning in the area at the time, which can create turbulence.
"It wasn’t blue sky. There were some storms out there," forecaster Ryan Sharp said.
A statement from Quality Powder Coating LP said Thursday, July 9 that that two of its employees and members of their families were on board the plane. The company said officials have not gotten confirmation from the NTSB on the status of those on the plane.
Carrollton-based Quality Powder Coating is an industrial powder coating and finishing company. Its Web site says powder coating is mostly used for coating metals and aluminum.

i knew them its so depressing when something like that happens 🙁
i remember riding in the jet 🙁
they were best friends with my family 🙁
Yes they have been a couple for 11 years. My partner intriduced the two of them to each other. RIP Roland and Steve. We will miss you!! Seeing them just two days before is so surreal.
OK This report refers to both Roland and Steve as a Couple? I need some clarification on this. I have known Roland since the early 80’s and maybe this is something I did not know about him but will not change my mind as he was my friend. Please calrify this report as insinuating these two business partners where a couple? RIP Roland you gave me many good memories.
Our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Roland and Steve. If it is true that they have been a couple for 11 years as Craig posted, I’m glad to see that bond/relationship/partnership recognized here. Thank you to the Dallas Voice for your inclusive reporting.
A very sad day indeed for anyone who knew Roland. He was a great guy and great friend and would do anything for you. I remember the days of building and racing cars with him and powder coating in a pizza oven in his garage 🙂 He was a great guy and will be missed.
Does anyone know if this was the Steve Barrows from Coldwater, Michigan?
Did anyone know the others on the plane
Did anyone know the others on the plane
Nothing has been mentioned about the other two on the plane. Gregg and Jeff. I have known Gregg for 35 years and Jeff for about 5+ years. You could not ask for better people. As long as I have known Gregg, I have never heard him say a bad word about anyone. Always happy and with a smile on his face. They were so kind and caring, helping anyone in need. I couldn’t believe when I heard the news, praying they were wrong. I will miss them terribly!
I did not know the others and thier names have not been released. I only knew Roland. I know Rolands caliber so I am sure the others where as good of people as well.
I first met Roland when I was woking for the Voice in the mid-90’s selling advertising for the paper. He was one of my best clients, but more importantly, he was a really, really great guy. When I left Dallas, I didn’t stay in touch. It makes me deeply saddened that he is gone, but I am lucky to have known him. He will be missed.
This is the first time that I have posted on the internet… I live down on the lake (Cedar Creek) where Roland and Steve have a lakehouse. I had meet them about 2yrs. ago, I bartend at Chili’s. These two men were the amazing. To have met them was an honor, and I will miss them so much even though the times where only smalltalk. I can only remeber their smiles and how they loved life.
I met Roland and Steve awhile back when they purchased a home in Phoenix. They were great guys who deserved a longer life. May they rest in peace.
I cant believe this happened. I was one of their good friends in the PHX area. Rowland introduced me to Crown and Diet Coke lol. If anybody gets word of the funeral, I know a few people here in phx who want to show their respect. All aboard that plane including the 2 dogs may you rest in peace and know you were deeply loved.
Can anyone tell me funeral details for Rolland? Place, date & time? Thank You
I was one of Roland’s first customers when he had that little shop in Lewisville behind the window tinting place. I’ve never known a finer person or a better business man. I always admired his drive and success in building a company that put so many people to work. I didn’t see him as often these days, but I will miss him forever.
Here is the information for Roland and Steve. I have known Roland since he was a teenager and he was loving life even then. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

@Krista – This post is a couple of years late but, yes, this is the Steve Barrows that lived in Coldwater. I worked with him (and his brother Brad) at Clay’s Restaurant and only recently found out about his passing. Very sad indeed.
