Convicted felon and Fox News commentator Oliver North has been named the new president of the National Rifle Association.
[EDITOR’S NOTE: As many people have pointed out in comments to this article, a judge later vacated Oliver North’s convictions.]
The NRA wrapped up its annual convention in Dallas on Sunday, May 6, but waited until Monday to announce its choice of the man who illegally sold arms to Iran to fund a civil war in Nicaragua as its new president. The Iran-Contra scandal, as it was known, occurred during the Reagan administration.
North was convicted on three counts — accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and destruction of documents. As a convicted felon, it’s not clear whether the new president of the NRA can even legally possess a gun.
President George H.W. Bush pardoned six administration officials involved in Iran-Contra. North wasn’t one of them.

Hey you are in the internet why don’t you use it? North had all his convictions vacated with the help of the ACLU (you know that liberal civil rights organization you like). All of the charges were dismissed. He ran for the senete in the early ‘op’s. You can’t do that if a convicted felon.
OK, as a retired law enforcement officer I know in most states persons convicted of a felony are not allowed to be in possession of a firearm. So how can Mr. North represent an institution such as the NRA as a convicted felon?
He is not a convicted felon. The article is incorrect. It was reversed with the help of the ACLU in 1991
This article is not accurate. All charges were dropped in 1991. But, since the NRA is simply an organization representing gun owners there is nothing to block a felon from actually being the head of it. Other than common sense.
Judge Gesell dismissed all charges against North on September 16, 1991.

His convictions were vacated.
I look forward to seeing David Taffet and the Dallas Voice sued for defamation.
Don’t forget that Ollie’s conceal carry permit was not renewed in 1994 when a state judge found him to not be of good moral character.
During these times of life imitating satire you just can’t make this stuff up.
