Show is a celebration of lives lost to AIDS told in free verse

The Cathedral of Hope will present an encore presentation of “Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens” on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. to benefit the church’s AIDS Crisis Fund.
“The Cathedral of Hope and the Dallas theater community created such a strong partnership last year that we wanted to do something again to observe World AIDS Day,” said David Plunkett, the show’s director and producer.
Plunkett, who is the church’s media representative, said the cast was enthusiastic about a second production, many people said they wanted to see it again and many people said they regretted not getting to see it the first time.
“We decided to offer it once more,” Plunkett said.
The show is a celebration of lives lost to AIDS told in free verse monologues with a blues, jazz and rock score. It is described as “at once comic and powerfully moving, this play with music tells the tale from the point of view of some 30 individuals who died as a result of contracting AIDS from a wide variety of sources.”
The cast of 40 will include Dallas performers Denise Lee, Gary Floyd, Cedric Neal, Sara Shelby-Martin, Juli Erickson, Rick Espaillat, John Garcia, Chad Peterson, Cara Statham-Serber and Diane Worman.
Staff members of the Cathedral of Hope, including the Rev. Jo Hudson, will also perform.
The performance will be in the main sanctuary of the church at 5910 Cedar Springs.
