About 30 legislators attend breakfast meeting
AUGUSTA, Maine — Leaders of a clergy group that supports a gay marriage bill in Maine hosted a breakfast with lawmakers to make their case for what they see as an equality measure.
About 30 lawmakers attended the Tuesday, March 17 gathering at an Augusta hotel. The Rev. Mark Worth of the Castine Unitarian-Universalist Church said the legislators included some supporters, some undecided and some opponents.
Worth is a member of the Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry, which includes more than 150 clergy members from 14 faiths. Worth says he’s cautiously optimistic that the gay marriage bill will pass.
The Maine Family Policy Council, formerly the Christian Civic League of Maine, the Catholic Diocese of Portland and other groups oppose the bill, which is sponsored by Sen. Dennis Damon, D-Trenton.
