When stage 1 breast cancer is caught and treated, the survival rate is close to 100 percent. A number of celebrities have had breast cancer and have beaten the disease.

• Cynthia Nixon. This "Sex and the City" star was treated for breast cancer in 2006 and is now a spokesperson for the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen Foundation.

• Rue McClanahan. This "Golden Girls" star recently appeared in Dallas in "A Sordid Affair." She told Dallas Voice that she surrounded herself with lots of friends and kept working throughout her treatments. She even appeared in a production of "Oklahoma" in South Carolina between two chemotherapy sessions.

• Melissa Etheridge. Received a standing ovation when she performed on the Grammy Awards in 2005 while bald from chemotherapy treatments.

•b Edie Falco. "The Sopranos" star was diagnosed in 2003.

• Cheryl Crow. Singer was diagnosed in 2006.

• Jaclyn Smith. The former Charlie’s Angel underwent a lumpectomy and radiation for breast cancer in 2002.

• Kate Jackson. This former Charlie’s Angel was treated for breast cancer in 1987.

• Dianne Carroll. The "Dynasty" star was treated for breast cancer in 1998.

• Nancy Reagan. The former first lady was diagnosed and treated in 1987 after a routine mammogram.

• Elizabeth Edwards. Wife of 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards was diagnosed and treated during his run for office.

• Rene Syler. Former Channel 11 news anchor, Dallas AIDS advocate and former host of "The Early Show" on CBS had a mastectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Breast cancer can affect younger people. Some younger celebrities affected:
• Anastacia. Singer treated for breast cancer in 2003 at the age of 29. The Anastacia Fund at The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is concerned that women under the age of 40 are not generally targeted for breast cancer screening, self-examination and mammograms, except where there is a family history of breast cancer.

• Kylie Minogue. Diagnosed in 2005 at age 37.
• Christina Applegate. Underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at age 37.

•And just to put a face on male breast cancer, which accounts for less than 1 percent of cases, and are often not discovered while in stage 1 — Richard Roundtree. Diagnosed and treated in 1993.
