Uptown Players transports ‘Facts of Life’ to Mexican Riviera on RSVP

GIRLS! GIRLS! ‘Facts’ sets sail in April 18-25.

Uptown Players’ production of "The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode" was a monster hit when it played at the Rose Room last summer — so big, in fact, it’s grown beyond Texas. The original cast will be taking the production on the road… well, not so much the road as the sea. The campy, cross-dressing comedy will be some of the featured entertainment on a gay RSVP cruise of the Mexican Riviera from April 18–25.

"I’ve never been on a cruise, much less a gay cruise, so this should be interesting," says Kevin Moore, who plays uber-butch Jo. "It’s six weeks away and it still hasn’t hit me yet. Until I shop for the Speedo, I don’t think it will hit me."

The cruise includes stops in Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas — which sounds suspiciously like an episode of "The Love Boat." Maybe they have chosen the wrong 1980s show to spoof. Visit RSVPvacations.com for details.

Furry gays gather for Camp Bear
You know the old joke about whether a bear poops in the woods? Well if you want proof, sign up for Camp Bear and see one use a toilet in the woods. Bears, cubs, otters, wolves and more furry gays will turn out for Timberfell Lodge Men’s Resort in Greenville, Tenn., for four days starting June 11. More than 300 participants are expected at the high-end outing that includes saunas, steam rooms and tiki bars in addition to the hiking and camping opportunities. Registration is $45 before May 9 ($75 the week of the event). Visit Campbear2009.com for details.

Travel diary
Hostels have long been the accommodations preferred by young, budgetconscious single travelers, mostly in Europe. But the industry has been making in-roads into the American travel industry, too — including the gay market. The Web site Hostelworld.com recently ranked the top five gay-friendly hostels in North America. Not surprisingly, three very gay cities dominate: USA Hostels in San Francisco, Jazz on South Beach in Miami, and Chelsea International and Broadway Hotel & Hostel in New York. The final one rounding out the list: Apple Hostels in Philadelphia.

Indeed, the aptly-named City of Brotherly Love has been actively pursuing gay travel dollars recently. In April, the city hosts Mr. Gay Philadelphia, the 10th annual Philadelphia Black Gay Pride and the weeklong Equality Forum. In May, the first-ever GLBT Artists Festival kicks off, while nearby Bucks County holds New Hope City Pride Weekend with Lady Bunny.

For sports fans, Philly’s gay swim team sponsors its 9th bi-annual GLBT swim meet, while the Liberty Bell Classic features soccer and softball competitions.

For those who prefer their springs a little farther south, St. Petersburg, is gearing up for nearly four weeks of theater under the stars with "Altar Boyz" and the American Stage in the Park April 17–May 10. And in late May and early June, don’t forget to about Gay Day at DisneyWorld in neighboring Orlando.
