A burglar made off with thousands of dollars worth of clothing and jewelry from the Genesis Benefit Store on July 5, police said.

The number of business burglaries in Oak Lawn doubled in the first half of 2013 over the first half of 2012, according to statistics from the Dallas Police Department.

The area saw 18 business burglaries from January through June of 2013, up from just nine for the same period in 2012. And the trend appeared to be continuing in July, with business burglaries reported at the Genesis Benefit Store on Lemmon Avenue on July 5 and at Spin 4 Life on Cedar Springs Road on July 8.

The number of motor vehicle burglaries also increased in the first half of 2013, with 154 BMVs reported compared to 145 during the first six months of 2012, an increase of 6 percent.

“It is unacceptable that almost 50 percent of our reported crimes are BMVs,” Oak Lawn crime watch leader Nancy Weinberger wrote in an email Monday. “When are people going to learn to LOCK TAKE HIDE?”

The Oak Lawn crime watch group meets at noon Wednesday, July 17 at the Oak Lawn Library Branch. See a map of offenses that occurred in the area in June below.
