A vote to include protections for Keller ISD students and employees based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression has been postponed for further consideration, according to a release sent by the district.
“There have been many passionate pleas on both sides of the issue from parents, community members, and current and former students,” district superintendent Randy Reid said in a statement.
The proposal was set to be voted on by the board tonight. Two trustees, Jo Lynn Haussmann and Brad Schofield, backed by many social conservatives, rallied public opposition to the ordinance.
In a screenshot sent to the Voice by Fairness Fort Worth’s David Henderson, Haussmann questioned on Facebook why transgender children aren’t “normal” and agreed with another commenter transgender adults should go through counseling.
Schofield called his fellow board members “liberal.”
Reid, however, did not blame either side for pulling the ordinance.
“There have been many passionate pleas on both sides of the issue from parents, community members, and current and former students,” he said. “The district’s sole intent in recommending the proposed changes was to ensure that all of our students feel protected by our policy language. The issue has become extremely polarizing, with the great potential of creating feelings of winners and losers.”
