According to an exclusive on The Nation’s Web site, former President Bill Clinton — the man who signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law when he was in the White House — has now said he supports marriage equality.
During questioning following his address at the Campus Progress National Conference in Washington, DC, on July 8, Clinton was asked if he supported same-sex marriage, he replied: “Yeah.. … I personally support people doing what they want to do. I think it’s wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage].”
The Nation says the former president joins a string of prominent Democrats who have recently switched their position on the issue, including former Democratic National Committee chair Howard Dean, New York Senator Charles E. Schumer, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd.
How convenient, then why didn’t veto DOMA when he had the chance and save everyone alot of grief!?!
What an odd way to announce a major change of opinion. At least when Al Gore did it, he posted a video on YouTube.
In May, Clinton told an audience in Toronto that his position on same-sex marriage was “evolving”.
I have a letter from President Clinton dated July 2, 1997 stating ” Although I signed the Bill sent to me by Congress because it was consistent with my longheld views, I stongly believe that raising the issue last year was divisive and unnecessary, especially in view of the timing. It was yet another attempt to divert the Amierican people from the urgent need to confront our challenges together. The rich fabric of American society is woven from the threads of our shared experience, and it is of the utmost importance that our nation work to expand this common ground.”
I have said it many times “I am a work in progress and my views are subject to change as I continue to grow.” I allow him the same. It appears he is growing and changing, or maybe just helping set the ground work for a run by Hillary for President again.
Ugh. Must be his “religious” beliefs or just pandering to the “religious” voters.
Why do we expect politicians to change their minds when doing so will surely send them STRAIGHT to HELL?
If we could erase Christianity from Clinton’s mind he would have no trouble supporting gays AND gay marriage. We need an eraser. Any ideas?
Bill Clinton is utterly powerless, so his opinion really doesn’t matter. He sold us out a long time ago, and this change of heart won’t make any tangible difference whatsoever. The test of his mettle came at the moment he signed his name to DOMA. He caved.
Now we’re seeing a repeat with Obama. Is it any wonder so many in our community supported Hillary? She’s the real deal. Always has been. As for her running for president again, it won’t happen. We may as well face the facts: we’re going to be eating crumbs for at least the next decade.
