CTD opens ‘Children of a Lesser God’
Before Marlee Matlin played a lesbian on The L Word, she won an Oscar playing a deaf woman in the film version of Children of a Lesser God. The Tony Award-winning play gets a rare revival this week, opening right after the Fourth of July. Local actors Ashley Wood and Marianne Galloway (the latter of whom truly is hearing-impaired) star … and they’ve been practicing American Sign Language for months.

Artist and model celebrate the male form with demo
If you had Heath Billups’ body, pictured right, you’d probably let people paint you, too. And we don’t just mean pose at a sitting, but actually have an artist apply paint to his body. OK, maybe you wouldn’t, but Billups will at an unusual demonstration and art exhibit Saturday. Local artist Anja Yamanji-Lawson will decorate Billups’ form with paints, then another artist, Rolando Diaz, will take his inspiration from that body to instantly create a new work of art. The Deep Ellum pop-up art event will have wine as well as art for sale — including previous works inspired by Billups.

Asian Film Festival kicks off
Dallas’ 12th annual Asian Film Festival begins its 10-day celebration not only of films about Asians, but also by Asians … and as has become the custom, there are some gay-themed features, including Before You Know It, a documentary (set partly in Texas) about gay retirees and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, a poignant comedy about coming out late in life. But there are many more good films worth watching as the fest moves from the Magnolia to its new digs at the Angelika Film Center.

DEETS:
Angelika Film Center,

5600 Mockingbird Lane.
July 11–21.
