Thai community launches inaugural Thai Festival

The Thai community has been active in North Texas life for decades, but a lot of folks probably still don’t know much about the rich culture … aside from the numerous excellent Thai restaurants across the Metroplex. They hope to change that with the first-ever North Texas Thai Culture and Food Festival, a free weekend-long celebration of Thai cuisine (including a best-of contest!), dance, religion, crafts and more (and gay-friendly, too!). It’s a huge event for a kick-off, all taking place at a gorgeous Buddhist temple.

DEETS:
The Buddhist Center of Dallas,
8484 Stults Road.
Saturday at 11 a.m., Sunday at 10 a.m.

Margarita Meltdown returns

Dallas’ summer season officially begins this weekend (note the swimwear throughout the publication!), and that means parties … and no party is complete without a margarita. So why not a festival of margaritas? Milagro and Cointreau present the fourth annual Margarita Meltdown, which celebrates the 80-year-old tequila concoction with tastes of the potent potable from a variety of mixologists, with one version crowned the best of the city. Remember: It’s important to participate in the voting process. It’s not about who wins, it’s about how drunk you get.

DEETS:
The Bishop Arts District.
5–10 p.m. $30.

John Waters shares his filthy world at the Kessler

If he never made another movie except Pink Flamingos, John Waters would still be in the pantheon of great gay icons. But he’s done so much more. He’ll share his stories from a long, interesting life in his one-man talk, This Filthy World, at The Kessler this week. Most shocking of all? Waters insists the show is “family-friendly.”
