Toast to Life commemorates 20 years with Bollywood party

For a long time, one of the Resource Center’s big annual fundraisers has been Toast to Life. Just how long? Well, this year’s event will be its 20th. So they are doing it up with glamour, themed around a Bollywood Night of color and music. There will be bites from local chefs, specialty cocktails, love and silent auctions hosted by Steve Kemble and dancing brought to you by DJ Jennifer Miller, especially if you come dressed for the theme of the night. You won’t be sari!

DEETS: Empire Room,
1225 N. Riverfront Blvd.
7–11 p.m. $150.

Kitchen Dog presents the regional premiere of the boxing play ‘The Royale’

Jack Johnson, nicknamed the Galveston Giant, was one of the most famous boxers of his era (and even all time), which he accomplished as a black man in the Jim Crow South. Marco Ramirez’s play The Royale was inspired by his legendary skill in the face of sizeable adversity. Kitchen Dog Theater presents the region premiere starting Thursday, and actor Jamal Gibran Sterling has been in training for months to embody the fighter inside and outside the ring — the real Black Panther of his day.
