Uptown Players puts on regional premiere of ‘The View UpStairs’

Until the Pulse nightclub shooting, the largest mass-murder of gays in the U.S. was a fire at New Orleans’ UpStairs Lounge in 1973. The View UpStairs, a 2017 Off-Broadway musical by Max Vernon, chronicles the background of those events. Uptown Players stages the regional premiere of this show, with Priscilla Queen of the Desert’s Blake McIver back on the Kalita stage,  plus William Blake, Walter Lee, Steven Pounders and more.

DEETS:
Kalita Humphreys Theater,
3636 Turtle Creek Blvd.

Bruce Wood Dance premieres powerful new work this weekend

Choreographer Garrett Smith has never been a political person, but that changed when he learned how dangerous it is just to dance in many oppressive countries. And so for his commission for Bruce Wood Dance, he created Forbidden Paths, a powerful piece getting its world premiere this weekend. It will be accompanied by two other works — one from artistic director Joy Bollinger, and a classic from the founder’s repertoire.

DEETS:
Moody Performance Hall,
2520 Flora St. 8 p.m.

Carole King musical ‘Beautiful’ returns to Dallas

A substantial part of the appeal of a jukebox musical is the quality of the songs being jukeboxed, and when Carole King is the composer — she of “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “It’s Too Late”  and almost too many more to count — you’ve got the makings of a masterpiece. And the story of King, as performed in Beautiful, is just as powerful. It returns to the Winspear for one week.

DEETS:
Winspear Opera House,
2403 Flora St.
