George Alan Rekers, who co-founded the Family Research Council with James Dobson and is one of the nation’s leading anti-gay activists, has been outed by the alternative weekly newspaper Miami NewTimes.
Rekers, a Baptist minister who’s considered a top scholar for the Christian right, hired a gay escort from RentBoy.com to accompany him on a recent trip to Europe, NewTimes has confirmed. Rekers is currently a board member for the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), a prominent “ex-gay” organization.
When confronted with the information, Rekers told NewTimes that he hired the escort to help him carry his luggage because he recently had surgery:
Yet Rekers wouldn’t deny he met his slender, blond escort at Rentboy.com — which features homepage images of men in bondage and grainy videos of crotch-rubbing twinks — and Lucien confirmed it.
At the small western Miami townhome he shares with a roommate, a nervous Lucien expressed surprise when we told him that Rekers denied knowing about his line of work from the beginning. “He should’ve been able to tell you that,” he said, fidgeting and fixing his eyes on his knees. “But that’s up to him.” …
In his interview with New Times, Lucien didn’t want to impugn his client, but he made it clear they met through Rentboy.com, which is the only website on which he advertises his services. Neither Google nor any other search engine picks up individual Rentboy.com profiles, any more than they pick up individual profiles on eHarmony or Match.com. You cannot just happen upon one.
To arrive at Lucien’s site, Rekers must have accepted Rentboy.com‘s terms of use, thereby acknowledging he was not offended by graphic sexual material. He then would have been transported to a front page covered with images of naked, tumescent men busily sodomizing each other.
Then Rekers must have performed a search. Did he want a “rentboy,” a “sugar daddy” or a “masseur”? In what country? And what city? If Rekers searched for a rent boy in Miami, he would have found approximately 80 likely candidates. He must have scrolled down the first page, past the shirtless bears and desperate ex-models, and on to page 2. There, at last, was Lucien.
In a press release responding to the story, Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out, which works to counter the ex-gay movement, called on Rekers to resign from the NARTH board and apologize to the LGBT community:
“This is a bombshell that completely discredits the ex-gay industry and proves that the movement is a fraud,” Besen said. “While Rekers keeps a low public profile, his fingerprints are on almost every anti-gay effort to demean and dehumanize LGBT people. Lobby groups that work to deny equality to LGBT Americans ubiquitously cite his work. Rekers has caused a great deal of harm to gay and lesbian individuals. …
“‘It is clear that Rekers has baggage and certainly needs help,” said Besen. “At least he did not say he was walking the Appalachian Trail. Given the sordid and tawdry facts, he should immediately step down from NARTH’s Board and apologize to the LGBT community for his extreme hypocrisy and self-loathing. As of today, his entire body of work on LGBT issues is rendered meaningless.”
How soon before he ships himself off to rehab?
Sometimes the hypocrisy of these guys is just plain funny! And what a bad comb over, sheesh!
His luggage? Hilarious! More like his baggage…this man has a lot of ‘getting real’ to do.
If only he could undo the decades of harm that he’s done to GLBT individuals across the country over the previous three decades.
In his defense, even a straight, anti-gay minister is apt to fall for the magical spells of some of these young, hot, blond guys.
I was straight at one time and was abruptly swept in to the gay nexus by one of these things.
He can’t go to rehab. He IS rehab.
@Chuck
Dude, please don’t read this as being disrespectful but “magical spell… young, hot blond” ??
There’s nothing wrong with a man who is Bisexual in the least, but how does an Older, Responsible, and Established Adult Man fall under a spell?
Does the youngster offer sex in exchange for his own personal gain and the elder forgets how to say NO ?
This seems more like a case of the elder not coming to terms with his own self-identity and too worried what “others thing of him” rather than being honest.
Did he wake up one morning and say “screw the gurrrls, I’m gonna find me a lolipop to suck on” completely out of the blue? Yeah, I’ve been married to a hetero woman too in addition of being sexually assaulted by a stepfather from age 10-17 and told that all dudes did it when they needed to bust a nut and there weren’t any broads around.
After I divorced and got into the gay scene with someone I really cared about, most of the time I had to fight off all the old trolls who were hitting on me not me hitting on them… so how in the heck do you defend this guy for connecting with a young male hooker?
This guy was truly a case of the pot calling the kettle black. But if the guy liked dick and pussy why the hell couldn’t he be honest about it? Why did he have to scream really loud and so negative at the very thing he secretly did himself?
This is truly a case of someone who yells the loudest when they’ve got the most secrets to hide and it really pisses me off.
But there’s also another issue here too. When people like this are outed publicly, the GLBT community becomes even more enraged with hate in return and the line between acceptance gets even wider. No, I’m not going to hate Mr. Rekers and yes, to this very day I can still appreciate the sexual beauty of a woman even though I have chosen my path and am very much in love with my male significant other after 15 years.
It disappoints me to see all these ‘say one thing and do another’ liars and the only thing that these people harm are their children of tomorrow. Yes, bisexual men have children but they pound their own self-hate into their kids who grow up to be the biased hate mongers of tomorrow.
It also teaches me that if I were to have my own kids, I would beat them into the next millennium if they behaved this way with their peers for being different.
You *don’t* have to *like* everyone that you know.. but you *do* need to *respect* them and possibly learn something new in the process.
Maybe *THIS* should have been the 11th Commandment for all the ‘holier than thou’ god fearing folk out there.
Here in the year 2010, how come there’s so many people who can’t tell the difference between SEX and LOVE when it comes to relationships? There’s guys who can love their wives and their families and still wanna fuck men. Are we supposed to attack them for this or ask them to enlighten us as to why? Or do we attack them for manipulating others for the sole purpose of their own personal gain? Trust is earned not bought. It all starts with honesty not accusations
Rick you really don’t understand the meaning of sarcasm, do you?
If only Lusty Larry Craig knew about that site he’d save himself a world of airport bathroom embarrassment.
Ok at this point, are ANY anti-gay “religious right” politicians actually straight?
Look at that mustache. Hell-O?
The Devil made him do it!!!!!!!
Help carrying his bag ? Must have been his Teabag. This boy needs a spanking. He probably wanted that too for all the naughty things he’s done, like being a total hypocrite and betraying the gay community with his BS change-a-gay pseudo-behavioral science. This a-hole needs to be fisted till he gets a blossom. Unfortunately, given all the repressed self loathing he would probably enjoy that.
This is almost being cliché – rabid anti-gay minister caught sampling the delights of a ‘rent’ boy and giving a head-spinning and hilarious excuse for it. Soon red-in-the-face anti-gays will be immediately assumed to be repressed and twisted by the masses (like the rest of us already knew).
It’s a good day. I love it.
@Rick. Really, it was my attempt at bringing humor to the repeated hypocrisy and not an attempt at rationalizing it. I don’t really believe attractive guys have magical spells but I admit I get a rush when I see one 🙂
I simply ask that people not judge Christianity by those claiming the name of Christian but by Christ himself. Humans fail, Christ did not. Please don’t assume that Christianity is about what we as humans make it to be…get a bible, pray for discernment and read it for yourself without preconceived notions. God will reveal the truth to you but you have to read it honestly and without your own agenda…if a change is in order, make it! God will give you the power to do so
@Chuck, Thanks for the honest reply.
Sadly, without hearing the person’s voice it’s a bit difficult to interpret the difference between being serious, some humor, or even sarcasm in the printed word.
But I guess @Ryan must have the gift of doing this better than myself since he did a nice job of attacking and ostracizing me for my lack of recognizing it.
Thanks anyhow… 😉
Terri,
We are not going to judge all christians by the actions of Mr Rekers; but a buddhists could have told him that all his suffering comes from the ignorance of his own nature (or rather from the nature of his ignorance ?)
This so-called scholar/doctor works with children. What else does he do with them?
Rent Boy “Lucien” (whom the Advocate identified as Jo-Vanni Roman) tells the Miami New Times all about his trip with anti-gay Christian right leader George Alan Rekers:
The male escort hired by anti-gay activist George Alan Rekers has told Miami New Times that the Baptist minister is a homosexual who paid him to provide body rubs, once a day, in the nude, during their ten-day vacation in Europe.
Rekers allegedly named his favorite maneuver the “long stroke” — a complicated caress “across his penis, thigh… and his anus over the butt cheeks,” as the escort puts it. “Rekers liked to be rubbed down there,” he says.
The paper adds: “Although Rekers does have physical ailments that make it difficult for him to haul suitcases, Lucien wasn’t hired to carry luggage on their European vacation, the escort says. ‘It’s a situation where he’s going against homosexuality when he is a homosexual,’ Lucien says. Lucien was interviewed late last night in the Fort Lauderdale house where he was laying low for the evening. The townhome he rents in a west Miami suburb has been inundated by uninvited guests since his identity was revealed by a blogger on Gawker shortly after the story broke.”
I’m gay and I have NO SYMPATHY for these evil jerks. They have no problem letting millions of people suffer so they can keep their sexuality a secret. Put him and these other hypocrites on a plane wrapped in American flags and drop them off in the middle of the Afghan mountains. Al Queda, do what you want to them with my permission!!!
Just sent a poison e-mail to the Family Research Council just to blow off a little righteously indignant steam. Thought I’d share as some might get a kick out of it. Toodles…
One down with Rekers; how many more to go? We are always watching you. Always. Always.
You believe your bible is the infallible word of your god and that therefore “[lying] with mankind, as with womankind…is abomination,” yet just a few chapters away, also in Leviticus, eating shellfish is also emphatically identified as an “abomination”—no strings, no contextual twists, plain as day in both passages. Why do you engage in this cafeteria-style religious practice? Simple: because you don’t feel hatred against shrimp but you do feel hatred against homosexuals. If it weren’t about hatred, you would denounce shellfish as well. So I’ll make you a deal: I’ll give up cock when you give up shrimp cocktail, you petty, uneducated bigots.
Terri said: “I simply ask that people not judge Christianity by those claiming the name of Christian but by Christ himself.”
The problem with your statement, Terri, is that the judgments being made are not about Christianity-the-private-religion but about Christianity-the-public-sociopolitical-institution. You can debate among yourselves about who is and who is not a true Christian until Judgment Day, but it won’t change the fact that Christianity takes public sociopolitical actions, which does, in fact, open it up to be judged based upon those public sociopolitical actions.
One cannot, as you suggest, “judge Christianity…by Christ himself” because Christ isn’t walking around taking public sociopolitical action; the modern incarnation of Christianity is. If the modern institutions of Christianity are going to insist upon acting both as private religious institutions as well as public sociopolitical institutions, then it is only right and proper that they be judged in both contexts. And you know as well as I do that this is far from an isolated incident of Christian hypocrisy.
I used to follow this nonsense, but hypocrites like this guy opened my eyes. go to
haveyoureadbalancetoday.blogspot.com and enjoy your life.God really doesnt care if you are gay. Not even a little.
Very funny story.
In fact from my personal experience I know that the most of anti gay activists are gays, trying to hide that with this activity.
