Rights group says schools block pro-gay sites but allow acacess to anti-gay sites
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal lawsuit against two Tennessee school districts for blocking gay issues Web sites.
The ACLU filed the case on Tuesday, May 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee against Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and Knox County Schools on behalf of three high school students and a librarian.
The lawsuit claims it violates students’ First Amendment rights to prohibit students from accessing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Web sites on school computers and only allowing access to sites that present anti-gay views.
The organization said in a release 105 Tennessee school districts use Internet filtering software to block Web sites containing pro-gay and lesbian speech.
