Gay-interest shows take to the stages of North Texas this week

The arts are exploding around town this weekend and it’s not just because of the new Arts District. These events add to the diversity of the week’s artistic options while proving the culture scene in the Metroplex is one to take seriously. Now it’s just a matter of squeezing them all in to your calendar.
Out conductor Cathy Brown leads her New Texas Symphony Orchestra in Ladies and Gentlemen, a concert honoring those people who have influenced the country into what it is today. But it’s a historic moment for the NTSO, as well, which becomes the first organization to perform in Hamon Recital Hall at the Winspear Opera House. Score another one for the gay groups. Theatre Three debuts Talley’s Folly, a heteromantic comedy by gay playwright Lanford Wilson. Sally and Matt are lovers who come from metaphorically different places. Add to that different religions and one can only imagine the wacky shenanigans. This peek into one night of their romance during World War II sets their future in motion. Dance fanatics can rejoice with three new shows this week. The gay-run Dallas-based Beckles Dancing Company performs Proceeding! at the South Dallas Dance Festival this weekend. Tickets are $10. Visit BecklesDancingCompany.org more information.
Contemporary Dance Fort Worth goes a little country this weekend with Barn Dance Boogie. They "do the funky chicken and 300 feet of modern dance at the poultry barn" at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. This may have to be seen to believe.
First they dance along the interior of the building to the music of Dallas composer Justin Eves while playing with shadows. Then they perform with the band Sloan Automatic, ending with a giant drum circle and participatory dance jam. Visit CDFW.org for details.
The Texas Dance Theatre does double duty performing New World first in Fort Worth on Friday and then Richardson on Sunday. The ballet team will dance to selections by Philip Glass, Yo-Yo Ma and Nat King Cole. Tickets are $25. Visit TexasDanceTheatre.com for information.
