There has never been anything especially gay about Michael Crichton, but the author of “Jurassic Park,” “The Andromeda Strain” (which, in a recent TV remake, did turn a lead character gay) and “State of Fear” has died. Why is this significant? Because he’s the only author I still always buy in hardback as soon as his books come out. His last, titled “Next,” was about genetic engineering — not his best, but, alas, his last.

Crichton was also a global warming denier. He was often called to testify in hearings and wrote numerous articles about it. Crichton argues that concern about global warming is best understood as a fad. He argues that many people concerned about global warming follow a herd mentality, failing critically to examine the data. The problem is he failed to examine the data that has convinced the majority of the worlds climate scientists that global warming was indeed real.
