We’re just about all packed for our move this weekend and we’ve even managed to put together a 48-page issue that’ll be on the stands Friday morning. As we were packing papers from the storage room, we found a few pages from the very first Dallas Voice printed May 11, 1984. Here are a few samples:

For our first issue, Crossroads Market welcomed the new newspaper. For many years, Crossroads remained the Dallas Voice’s biggest distribution point.
An ad for Throckmorton Mining Company. Look at the note on the bottom: “Watch for Heda Quote serving suds soon at TMC.” Heda was Rex Ackerman, who wrote what’s become our Scene pages for years. Tammye said she “served suds” at Jugs occasionally during her first few years at the Voice.
Howie Daire’s first column. Howie founded Oak Lawn Counseling Center — which became Oak Lawn Community Services — with Candy Marcum. The Daire Center at AIDS Interfaith Network is named for him.
The first sentence notes that Harvey Fierstein was the first openly gay person to win a Tony Award. Do they still give Tonys to straight people?
