Why does the SMU Mustang crosswalk in University Park get to stay? Would they let it remain if it were a rainbow pony?

Of course, we all know the rainbow crosswalks have to be removed as a matter of public safety. Because anything other standard crosswalks are distracting, according to our governor.

Never mind that Greg Abbott’s claims about safety contradict the actual evidence. In the decade before we had rainbow crosswalks on Cedar Springs Road, 10 accidents involving pedestrians occurred. Since the 10 crosswalks were installed, we’ve had no such accidents.

But no! Abbott’s “no creative crosswalks” directive surely isn’t about rainbows or Black Lives Matter! It’s all about standard traffic markings!

But if that’s true, then why do SMU and University Park get to keep their Mustangs crosswalks?

Since it’s about standardization, we assumed the SMU Mustang crosswalk in University Park would have to go. After all, it is made of brick, and it features a large picture of a horse right there in the middle of the intersection.

Surely that has to be as distracting as a rainbow, right?

I guess a pony is fine. But what if it were a rainbow pony? Or how about about a rainbow pony donated by SMU alumni?

The SMU Mustang decorative and non-standard crosswalk at the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue and Daniel Avenue in University Park doesn’t have to be removed.
