Dallas County Tax Assessor/Collector John Ames this week reminded Dallas County residents that property taxes are due by Jan. 31. Taxes not paid by that date will accrue an additional 7 percent of the balance in penalty and interest.
“Please don’t miss this important deadline as it can be costly,” Ames noted.
He also stressed that payments made by mail are credited according to the U.S. postmark date, and payments bearing postmarks past deadlines will incur full penalty and interest charges.
“If you plan to mail your payment, please be aware that the USPS has recently made changes to how it postmarks letters and packages, which can result in the postmark reflecting a later date than when an item is placed in a mailbox,” a press release from Ames’ office warned. “To ensure that your payment is postmarked by Jan. 31, you can go into the post office to request either a manual postmark, or you can mail it using registered or certified mail, which provides a mailing receipt and tracking.”
Ames suggests paying online to avoid missing postmark deadlines or standing in line at either the Dallas County Tax Office or the post office. County residents have the option of paying online with an eCheck for no additional fee or with a credit or debit card, which are subject to card processor convenience fees, the press release notes
To pay online with either an eCheck or a credit or debit card, visit the Dallas County Tax Office website or scan the QR code on your property tax statement.
Payments can also be made by phone by calling 1-877-253-0150.
“Please be safe and conduct your transaction online if possible,” Ames encouraged. “We look forward to serving the needs of the citizens of Dallas County.”
