Progressive activist today announced plans for a “Fight the Trump Takeover” rally next Monday, July 28, in Arlington, when Texas lawmakers hold a hearing there regarding redistricting efforts underway in the current special session of the Legislature.
“While families across the state recover from devastating flooding, Gov. Abbott is working on rigging our elections to top control of Congress,” noted a press release announcing the planned rally. “He’s called for a special legislative session to redraw electoral maps early to stop Democrats from taking back the House in 2028.
“Lawmakers are holding a hearing in Arlington to ask what the public thinks about this power grab. We’re showing up to demand they reject this sham redistricting effort.”
The Texas House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Redistricting will hold the last of three planned hearings on redistricting Monday, starting at 5 p.m. on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington.
(There will be a hearing in Houston on Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m.)
The “Fight the Trump Takeover” rally will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at 701 S. Nedderman Drive in Arlington, near the UTA campus. Organizations partnering to stage the rally are Asian Texans for Justice Action Fund, Black Voters Matter Fund, Common Cause Texas, Dallas AFL-CIO, Equality Texas, Jolt Action, MOVE Texas Action Fund, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, Progress Texas, Tarrant County Central Labor Council, Texas AFL-CIO, Texas For All, Texas Freedom Network, and Texas Organizing Project.
Those who want to testify against the redistricting plan can register in advance online, Testimony is limited to two minutes per person.
