No one seems to be talking about it, but Democrats did extremely well in local elections across Texas. Notable is how poorly Republicans fared in Tarrant County, the largest red county in Texas, and Collin County, one of the reddest counties in the state.

The Tarrant County Republican Party endorsed 11 candidates in Saturday’s elections in Fort Worth, Arlington and Mansfield. All 11 lost. Far right candidates also lost in Keller ISD and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD races.

And while city council races are non-partisan, Debrah Peoples, a former Tarrant County Democratic Party chair, won her race.

In San Antonio, lesbian mayoral candidate Gina Ortiz Jones came in first among a field of more than 20 candidates and is headed for a run-off against the number two vote-getter. In San Antonio city council races, several races will be decided in a runoff with progressives in the lead.

In very red Collin County, Democrats won a number of races. McKinney elected a Democrat to its city council. So did Plano. Murphy elected two and Richardson four plus a Democratic mayor. Allen, Community, Frisco and McKinney ISDs each have Democratic school board members now and Plano elected three.

In Rowlett, the new mayor in the heavily Republican Dallas County city is a Democrat.
