The 29th anniversary of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial will be held at Abundant Life Church of God in Christ on Sunday in South Oak Cliff.

More than 1,200 cities and towns in 115 countries will participate in candlelight memorials that day, making it the largest grassroots AIDS event ever, according to local organizer Auntjuan Wiley.

“The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is an opportunity to honor and remember the more than 30 million people lost to AIDS; to support the 34 million people living with HIV/AIDS; to defend all of those who are not infected with HIV/AIDS,” Wiley said.

The theme of this year’s event is “Promoting Health and Dignity Together.”

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Councilwoman Carolyn R. Davis, and Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson are expected to attend. E.L. Battles Memorial Choir will perform.

The keynote speakers are Michelle Anderson, Terrance Omar Gilbert and Helen Goldenberg.
