Manyonge Makokha

Manyonge Jarret “Jay” Makokha was presented with the first Hazel Hatcher Scholarship during the Legacy of Success Foundation’s first Linen Brunch, held Aug. 12 at Cosmo Rouge Bistro and Lounge in the Bishop Arts District.

More than 100 guests attended the luncheon, which organizers Felecia Miller, Katrina Franklin and Dwayne Richardson hope will become an annual fundraising event. Makokha received the scholarship named in memory of Miller’s late partner in recognition for his excellence in character, and achievement and for living as an out LGBT person.

A portion of the proceeds from the luncheon, which included a fashion show and a silent auction, will benefit the scholarship fund.

The Legacy of Success Foundation is a social, business and cultural organization formed to bring together the LGBT and questioning community of color. The group holds an annual Heritage Celebration in February, as well as several other social gatherings throughout the year.
