The 2005-2006 California legislative session came to a close on Aug. 31 having passed an unprecedented 14 bills and one resolution sponsored by Equality California. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed four of the bills and vetoed two, and still has eight bills under consideration.

“The 2005-2006 legislative session in California broke the record for the most LGBT rights bills ever passed by a state legislature in our nation’s history,” said Geoff Kors, EQCA executive director. “The legislature came down on the side of fairness and equality by passing each of the fourteen pieces of legislation and one resolution proposed and sponsored by Equality California from marriage equality to school safety to transgender health insurance to tax and insurance equity. We applaud the bi-partisan group of legislators who voted for our bills.”

The Legislature also passed a resolution supporting the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” No executive action is necessary for legislative resolutions.

“This record of accomplishment is something for our community to be very proud of and we appreciate the governor’s support on the bills he has signed,” said Seth Kilbourn, EQCA political director.
